Why it matters

Office air quietly shapes how people work

By mid afternoon, a closed meeting room full of people is stuffy for a reason. CO2 climbs, fine particles drift in from outside, and whatever bug someone brought in lingers in the air. None of it is visible, but it shows up in slower thinking, flatter energy and more days off. The research on this is now hard to ignore.

An honest read on the numbers: the biggest cognitive gains come from ventilation, which adds fresh air a purifier cannot. What a purifier does is handle the other half of the problem, the fine particles and airborne bugs that the same research links to lower performance and more illness. The two work best together, which is exactly how we will set your office up.

The hidden load

What an office actually puts in the air

Workplaces have their own mix. Knowing what you are dealing with is the first step to fixing the right thing, rather than buying a gadget and hoping.

CO2 and stuffiness

People breathe out CO2 all day. In a busy or closed room it builds quickly, and high CO2 is linked to drowsiness, headaches and slower thinking. A purifier will not lower it, which is why we also talk ventilation and monitoring.

Fine particles (PM2.5)

Traffic fumes, winter wood smoke and dust drift in from outside and settle indoors. These fine particles are small enough to reach deep into the lungs, and the same research that links them to ill health links them to lower focus at work. This is exactly what HEPA filtration is for.

Colds, flu and Covid

Shared open plan spaces spread respiratory bugs through the air. NZ public health researchers now recommend ventilation and filtration as practical tools to cut workplace transmission of Covid, flu and RSV.

VOCs and odours

New carpet and furniture, printers, markers and cleaning products all give off VOCs and smells. An activated carbon filter helps here, alongside fresh air. We are honest that carbon manages odours, it does not erase a source.

Dust and dander

Dust, paper fibres and pet dander from staff clothing all circulate. Less airborne dust also means a tidier space and, over time, cleaner vents and gear.

The honest summary

Two of these (CO2 and stuffiness) are a ventilation job. The rest (particles, bugs, smells, dust) are where a good HEPA purifier earns its keep. A monitor tells you how the ventilation half is going.

Our approach

Clean air on two fronts, measured so you know it works

No gimmicks and no overselling. Just the few proven things that move the needle in a workplace, set up properly for your rooms.

01

Ventilation for CO2

Fresh air dilutes CO2 and airborne bugs. Open windows where you can, and make the most of any mechanical fresh air. This is the half a purifier cannot do, and we will say so plainly.

02

HEPA filtration for particles

A well sized purifier captures the fine particles, dust and virus carrying aerosols that ventilation alone leaves behind. We size by CADR and air changes per hour, for your actual room, not by filter grade buzzwords.

03

Measure it with CO2

A CO2 monitor shows when a meeting room needs the door open or the window cracked, and confirms the setup is working. It turns an invisible problem into a number staff can act on.

Match it to the room

Which purifier suits which office space

Most offices are a mix of room sizes, so the right answer is usually a couple of different units, not one size everywhere. Here is a practical starting point. We will confirm exact sizing for your floor plan.

SpaceRough sizeGood fitWhy
Phone booths, focus rooms, reception Up to ~25m² Sqair or SA600 The SA600 runs at 16dB on low, quieter than most people can hear, so it suits focus and quiet rooms. The Sqair is the value pick for small spaces.
Standard meeting rooms, manager offices Up to ~60m² SA600 or SA700 The SA600 stays quiet through meetings. The SA700 wall mounts to save floor space and sips power, good where a unit lives in the room full time.
Open plan pods, large meeting and breakout rooms Up to ~85m² SA700 or Blast Mini Both deliver high clean air output. The SA700 is wall mountable and very low power, the Blast Mini adds speed flexibility and castors to move around.
Large open plan floors, halls, busy receptions Up to ~130m² Blast Mk II The highest clean air output we stock, yet barely noticeable at 43dB on full. Built to run all day in a big, busy space.

Room sizes are a guide based on roughly 3 air changes per hour. Higher traffic or higher risk spaces benefit from more. Send us your rooms and we will size it properly.

Smaller meeting and focus rooms?

For phone booths, quiet rooms, reception desks and small meeting rooms, the Sqair and SA600 are the right scale. The SA600 in particular runs at just 16dB on low, so it stays on without anyone noticing during deep work or calls.

Monitoring

Know when a room needs more fresh air

Meeting rooms fill with CO2 fast, often well before anyone feels it. A monitor on the wall turns that into a simple number, so the team knows when to crack a window or prop the door. It is the cheapest way to keep the ventilation half of the job honest.

Around 800ppm is a sensible target for a well ventilated room. Climbing past it is a cue to add fresh air. NZ public health researchers suggest 800ppm as a workable threshold for shared spaces.

Honest pairing: monitors do not clean the air, and purifiers do not lower CO2. You want both signals, fresh air for CO2, filtration for particles.

What clean air will and will not do for your office

We would rather set the right expectations now than oversell. Here is the honest version.

What a good setup does

  • Captures fine particles, dust and virus carrying aerosols from the air
  • Lowers the airborne load that research links to sick days and dull afternoons
  • Helps protect more vulnerable and immunocompromised staff and visitors
  • Runs quietly and cheaply enough to leave on all day

What it will not do

  • Lower CO2 or replace fresh air. That is a ventilation job
  • Fix a damp or mould source. It captures spores, it does not stop the cause
  • Remove smells baked into carpet or furnishings. Carbon manages odour, it does not erase a source
  • Guarantee nobody gets sick. It reduces risk, it is one layer of several

A note on "active" air treatments

You will see ionisers, bipolar ionisation and similar add ons marketed hard for offices, and plenty of NZ workplaces run them. We keep our distance. Independent evidence for real world benefit is thin, performance is rarely published with the technology switched off, and some devices can produce byproducts such as ozone. We stick to what is measurable and proven: mechanical HEPA filtration and fresh air. Our guide to air purifiers for viruses lays out what actually works.

Questions

Office air purifiers, answered

Will it be too loud for a quiet office?

No, if it is sized right. The SA600 runs at 16dB on low, quieter than most people can hear, and even our most powerful unit, the Blast Mk II, is only 43dB on full. We size so the purifier can do its job on a quiet speed, rather than forcing you to run it loud.

Do I need one in every room?

Usually one per enclosed space that people use regularly, sized to that room. Open plan areas often need one or more larger units depending on the footprint. We will map this to your floor plan so you are not over or under buying.

Will a purifier help with the stuffy, sleepy feeling in meetings?

That feeling is mostly CO2 building up, which is a ventilation issue, not a filtration one. A purifier will not lower CO2. What helps is fresh air, and a CO2 monitor to tell you when to open up. A purifier handles the particle and virus side at the same time.

Can it reduce colds and flu spreading around the office?

It can help. HEPA filtration removes virus carrying aerosols from the air, and NZ public health researchers list ventilation and filtration as practical tools to cut workplace transmission. It is one layer alongside fresh air and people staying home when unwell, not a guarantee.

What does it cost to run all day?

Very little. The SA700 draws about 12W, roughly the power of a Wi-Fi router, which is around 7 cents a day running continuously. The larger Blast units use more but are still cheap to run. We can give you per unit figures with a quote.

How often do filters need replacing, and what does that cost?

It depends on the model and how dirty your air is, but most run 10 to 18 months between changes. Filter costs are listed on each product page, and we will factor ongoing filter cost into any bulk quote so there are no surprises.

Do you offer bulk or multi site pricing?

Yes. Tell us how many units and rooms and we will put together honest pricing. We also help with sizing across multiple sites and can set up CO2 monitoring with a shared dashboard if you want visibility across locations.

What about ionising or "air sanitising" units other suppliers push?

We do not sell them. Independent evidence for real world benefit is limited, and some can produce ozone. We stick to proven HEPA filtration and ventilation. Our viruses guide explains why in plain English.
