Replacement Carbon Filter for the Smart Air Sqair Air Purifier

HEPA filters are built for particles like PM2.5 and dust, and gases normally pass straight through them. The Sqair's activated carbon filter is a separate layer that helps with everyday odours and some gases, including some VOCs (volatile organic compounds from things like cooking, cleaning products and new furniture). Activated carbon is porous, so gas and odour molecules stick to its surface as air passes through.


How well it works depends on the gas, how much of it is in the air and how long the filter has been in use. Carbon has a limited capacity and won't remove every gas, so ventilation and dealing with the source still matter. It works alongside your HEPA filter, and you can replace each one when it needs it.

How long does a carbon filter last?

There is no single replacement interval. Carbon filter life varies massively and depends on the type and amount of gases and odours it encounters, how often you run the purifier and how much activated carbon the filter contains.

How do I know when to replace it?

Smart Air recommends a smell test every 1–2 weeks to help judge when your carbon filter needs replacing.

  1. Switch off and unplug your purifier, then remove the carbon filter.
  2. Hold the centre of the filter near your nose and gently check for an unpleasant smell.
  3. If it smells sour, acidic or chemical, Smart Air recommends replacing it.

Also consider replacing the carbon filter if it no longer reduces the odour you bought it for. Colour and dust build-up do not tell you how much gas-filtering capacity remains, and removing surface dust does not restore that capacity.

The smell test is a practical maintenance guide. An absence of smell does not confirm that all gases have been removed.

What affects filter life?

Activated carbon has a limited capacity. Higher concentrations and frequent exposure can use that capacity more quickly. The type of gas, humidity, airflow and amount of carbon also affect performance, so a replacement schedule that suits one home may not suit another.

Looking after your carbon filter

The Sqair’s carbon filter sits underneath the HEPA filter, so dust and fluff can collect on its exposed underside. Check this area regularly and keep the purifier’s base and air inlet clear. Switch off and unplug the purifier before wiping with a slightly damp cloth or careful vacuum.

Do not wash or soak the carbon filter. Removing surface dust does not restore its capacity to capture gases and odours.

Fitting a replacement

Switch off and unplug your purifier before replacing its filters. Remove any protective packaging from the new filter and follow your model’s manual for the correct position and orientation.

Check the HEPA filter separately. Replacing the carbon filter does not automatically mean both filters need changing.

Cooking odours

Carbon can help reduce lingering cooking smells as air passes through the filter. Use your extractor fan and ventilation to remove pollution at its source. HEPA handles the airborne particles produced during cooking.

Pet odours

Carbon can help with some everyday pet odours. Regular cleaning and dealing with the source still matter, while HEPA captures airborne pet dander and other particles.

Smoky smells

Smoke contains both particles and gases. HEPA captures the particle component; activated carbon can help with some associated odours and gases. Performance depends on exposure and remaining carbon capacity.

Household VOCs

Some cleaning products, furnishings and other household materials release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Activated carbon can adsorb certain VOCs, but effectiveness varies by substance and conditions.

Carbon works alongside ventilation and reducing pollution at its source. It does not remove every gas. These filters are not designed to remove carbon dioxide or provide protection from carbon monoxide.

No. They do different jobs. HEPA captures airborne particles, while activated carbon helps with certain gases and odours. Use the carbon filter alongside the matching HEPA filter according to your purifier’s manual.

No. Check each separately and replace it when needed. The carbon filter can reach capacity while the HEPA filter still has useful life remaining, or vice versa.

Do not wash it. Treat it as a replaceable filter and follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Airing or sunlight should not be relied on to restore its original capacity.

Fit the carbon filter in the base underneath the HEPA filter. Remove its protective packaging before fitting, and follow the direction markings and your Sqair manual. The carbon filter and HEPA filter are separate layers and can be replaced independently.
