Air Purifiers for VOCs and Odours
Let's be upfront, because this is the concern with the most marketing nonsense around it. A HEPA filter does nothing for smells. Odours and VOCs are gases, and only activated carbon helps with gases. Good carbon genuinely cuts everyday cooking, pet and general odours and lowers background VOCs, but it won't instantly beat a strong smell, won't shift odours soaked into walls or carpet, and it can't replace ventilation. We sell carbon that actually works, by weight, and we'll always be straight about where it stops.
- Real pellet carbon
- No ioniser, no ozone
- Christchurch support
- Best value
Odours and VOCs need the purifier running to keep up, so quiet matters. The Sqair sits at 23 dB on low and the SA600 at just 16 dB, quiet enough to leave on in a kitchen, a workshop or a freshly painted room.
Find your fit in two taps
Most people are tackling one room, a kitchen, a new or freshly painted room, or a workshop. Tell us where it'll run and how big the space is, and we'll point you to the right unit. Heavy VOCs need plenty of carbon, so size up or add extra carbon filters for those. No quiz, no email.
Sizes are matched to keep around three air changes an hour at a comfortable noise level for each setting. Bedrooms stay under 30 dB for sleep; living areas can run louder by day for extra airflow.

Even bigger, or a large quiet bedroom?
For VOCs, the Blast range is the serious pick: it carries far more carbon, 550g in the Blast Mini and 900g in the Blast Mk II per filter, so it lasts much longer against heavy or persistent VOC loads in bigger or open-plan spaces. The Blast Mk II also runs at just 29 dB on low.
How purifiers help with VOCs and odours, and what to expect
HEPA handles particles. Smells and VOCs are gases, so the HEPA filter does nothing for them. Activated carbon is the part that adsorbs gases, and it's what does the odour work. If a purifier doesn't carry meaningful carbon, it won't help with smells, no matter how good its HEPA filter is.
Carbon quality is everything here. What works is real pellet or granular carbon, measured by weight, not a thin coated mesh. A lot of units claim a "carbon filter" that's a token sheet, which can saturate in minutes in a smelly room. Ours use real pellet carbon, by weight: 140g in the Sqair, 340g in the SA600, 550g in the Blast Mini and 900g in the Blast Mk II. The SA700 goes furthest of all, with an optional 1.5kg carbon pack, the most of anything we stock, which makes the SA700 plus carbon our strongest setup for VOCs and odours. On the smaller units you can also add extra carbon filters, or even remove the HEPA and run multiple carbon filters for heavy VOCs.
Renovating or in a new build? Off-gassing from fresh flooring, cabinetry, paint and adhesives is a common reason people land here. Ventilation comes first, then carbon helps as a steady layer, especially when you can't open up. Our new home VOCs guide covers it, including using a TVOC monitor to see what's working.
Carbon can help with
- Everyday cooking smells
- Pet and litter tray odours
- General mustiness and background VOCs
- Off-gassing from new furniture or renovations, as a supporting layer
It won't
- Remove smells soaked into walls, carpet, curtains or furniture
- Fully clear strong cigarette smoke, from a neighbour or a smoker's house
- Replace ventilation for strong or persistent odours
- Keep working once saturated, so the carbon needs replacing
Where carbon helps, and where it doesn't
Be wary of any purifier that promises to "eliminate" odours or "neutralise" VOCs. No filter does that completely. Carbon reduces and manages smells, it doesn't make a room odour-proof. Here's the honest version, because you'll get better results knowing it.
Ventilation beats carbon for strong smells. Fresh air is the most effective tool. Carbon is the layer for when you can't open up.
"Carbon filter included" usually means a thin sheet. What matters is real pellet carbon by weight. Thin mesh saturates in minutes.
Carbon saturates and needs replacing. Once it's full it stops helping, so plan on swapping it, sooner in high-VOC settings.
And the one we'll always say out loud: smells embedded in walls, carpet and furniture won't shift no matter how good the filter is. Cigarette smoke is the classic example. That's a cleaning, sealing or airing-out job, not a filter job. We'd rather you buy the right amount of carbon, or none if HEPA is all you need, than oversell you. The full detail is in our guide to odours and VOCs.

Relief from new-build off-gassing
I've found the SA600 highly beneficial in reducing the off-gassing from the newly fitted carpets and kitchen cabinetry in my home. It has provided relief from the effects of the off-gassing on my health. Well designed, easy to operate and change filters, and the service was excellent.

Controls VOCs from 3D printing
I use it in an engineering office to control VOCs from 3D printing. It gets the room from very unhealthy levels down to something safe in about 10 minutes on high, then keeps it there all day on low. On low it's slightly quieter than a heat pump, so very unobtrusive.

Keeps the kitchen smelling fresher
We bought this primarily to combat dustiness and lingering cooking smells, as we have an open-plan kitchen and living area. The Sqair does just that, and keeps the room feeling and smelling fresher. Attractive, portable, and surprisingly effective for its size.

Tackles both pollen and VOCs
I bought the SA600 because I needed something that could effectively tackle both pollen and VOCs. The air in my home feels noticeably cleaner and fresher. It's lightweight, easy to operate, and whisper quiet on the lowest setting overnight. Their support was genuinely helpful too.
