Why should you get an Air Purifier?

In recent years people are waking up to the importance of air quality. First it was pollution outdoors, and now we're learning more about the air indoors - where we spend almost all of our time!

Given how important the air we breath is to our health, it's important to take proactive steps to safeguard it. One such step is investing in an air purifier. Whether dealing with allergies, asthma, pets, or looking to improve the air quality in various areas like homes, offices, or schools, an air purifier can significantly enhance your environment and overall well-being.

The New Zealand Air Quality Context

While New Zealand boasts comparatively low levels of air pollution, we are not immune to the challenges of air quality. In fact you might be surprised to learn the most dangerous pollutant (PM2.5) has only started to be monitored here recently. Many cities are still focusing on the larger PM10 particles, and don't even have the infrastructure to check for PM2.5.

What causes air quality issues here? Smoke from fireplaces, vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and even pollen from our rich flora can degrade our air quality. These factors can also trigger asthma attacks and allergic reactions, showing the important of air purification in many settings.

Air Purifiers: Your Ally for Clean Air

Air purifiers are devices designed to cleanse your environment by eliminating pollutants and allergens from the air. The result? You're left breathing cleaner, fresher, and healthier air. These can be particularly beneficial in enclosed spaces where ventilation may be limited, thereby reducing the chances of respiratory problems.

Why Invest in an Air Purifier?

The primary reason to purchase an air purifier is their ability to lessen your exposure to airborne irritants and allergens. For allergy or asthma sufferers, this means improved health conditions, fewer flare-ups, and a reduced reliance on medication. But the benefits don't stop at allergy relief:

Eliminating Odours:

Beyond enhancing respiratory health, air purifiers when fitted with an activated carbon filter can mitigate unpleasant odours in any space. This is great if you own pets or you don't like the smell of your neighbour cooking garlic!

Preventing Illness:

As we're all too familiar with over the past few years, nasty viruses and bacteria can be transmitted in the air when people are present.

If you have an air purifier running, the HEPA filter can capture these particles and help reduce the likelihood of people getting sick!

Improving Sleep:

Better air quality can also lead to improved sleep quality. Allergens and other air pollutants can disrupt your sleep, but an air purifier can help you breathe easier at night.

Choosing Your Air Purifier

Man surrounded by question marks

Decided you want to get an air purifier? There are a number of factors to consider for your purchase. We've gone into detail with our guide to choosing an air purifier. The key areas to consider are:

Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR):

This is a measure of how quickly the purifier can cleanse the air, measured in cubic metres per hour. Because manufacturer recommended space sizes are often misleading, it's best to compare air purifiers by their CADR. Consider the size of the room you intend to use it in. A small purifier may not be adequate for a large room, while a larger purifier might be unnecessary for a smaller space.

Noise Level:

As purifiers often run continuously, choose a model that operates quietly to avoid disturbance, especially if you plan to use it in a bedroom. We generally recommend no higher than 55dB at full power, and when on low under 30dB for use in bedrooms.

Filter Replacements:

Consider the cost and frequency of filter replacements, as this can add to the overall expense over time. Also ensure you're easily able to find replacement filters, as these can sometimes be impossible to find.
