For hayfever, morning congestion, dust, and pet dander, the Sqair is a straightforward HEPA purifier built around the things that actually matter: strong airflow, quiet operation, and honest filtration. Works well in bedrooms, lounges, and kitchen spaces, and is a popular choice for pet owners.

What it captures

H12 HEPA rated at 99.5% at 0.3 microns, the hardest particle size to catch, not the smallest. Particles above and below that size, including viruses like Covid, are captured more efficiently. At sufficient air changes per hour, it meaningfully reduces airborne virus concentrations.

Available in HEPA + Carbon (default, 140g carbon for cooking smells, pet odours, smoke, and VOCs) or HEPA only.

One year of overnight filtering in a Christchurch bedroom

This is the HEPA filter from a Sqair we ran in our own bedroom for about a year. The right side shows what a new filter looks like. The left is what it captured during that time; dust, smoke, fine particulates. All of that would otherwise have been in the air!

What Makes the Sqair Different?

04. Hello HEPA Filtration

The Sqair uses a high-efficiency H12 HEPA filter made from polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET) fibres. It captures 99.5% of particles above and below 0.3 microns, including pollen, dust, and pet dander down to 0.005 microns.

Each filter has over 1.5 m² of surface area, equivalent to 22 sheets of A4 paper - giving it exceptional airflow and long filter life. The combination of large surface area and high airflow means it cleans rooms quickly while staying quiet and efficient.

05. Activated Carbon for Odours & Gases

On the HEPA + Carbon version, the Sqair’s carbon filter contains 140g of real activated carbon pellets; not thin foam sheets. These carbon granules are highly porous, giving each gram a surface area of up to 1500 m² to absorb harmful gases and odours.

It helps remove everyday indoor pollutants like VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from cleaning products and furniture, as well as odours from cooking and pets. The result is fresher, cleaner air with fewer irritants.

Yes. The Sqair’s high Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) and H12 HEPA filter quickly remove triggers like dust, pollen, mould spores, and pet dander. While results can vary and we can't guarantee success, many users find relief from asthma and allergy symptoms when the air is consistently cleaned.

Air purifiers can help with dust, but they won’t remove all the visible stuff. Larger, heavier dust tends to settle on surfaces quickly, so it often falls before the purifier can capture it. What purifiers are best at is reducing the fine, invisible dust (PM2.5) that stays airborne longer - that’s the type most linked with allergies and irritation.

You’ll get the best results for dust with a high CADR purifier, and by avoiding ionisers, which can actually cause more dust to settle by making particles clump together. Running the purifier on higher speeds also gives it a better chance of catching dust before it drops.

Many purifiers add cheap, inaccurate sensors that can switch off too early - leaving air still unsafe. The Sqair skips these gimmicks to keep costs low and performance high. We recommend running it whenever people are around (or 24/7, it’s built for it). For accurate readings, pair it with a standalone monitor.

Yes. HEPA filters like the Sqairs H12 filter doesn’t just catch larger dust - it also traps ultrafine particles down to 0.005 microns, including viruses like Covid. This is thanks to Brownian Motion, which makes tiny particles more likely to collide with filter fibres.

H13 blocks slightly more per pass (99.97% vs 99.5%), but the denser media restricts airflow and lowers CADR. With H12, the Sqair moves more air through the filter, which is what actually determines how clean your room gets. A higher filter grade is only an advantage if the purifier has the airflow to back it up. We've covered this in more detail in our guide to H13 HEPA filters.

Adding one would cut airflow and reduce CADR. Instead, the carbon filter’s outer layer traps dust and pet fur, which can be gently vacuumed off. This keeps airflow high without hidden compromises.

HEPA filter: Lasts around 10 months (8 hrs/day use). Replace when airflow drops or the filter looks grey/black.

Carbon filter: Use the “smell test” - if it has a metallic/acidic smell, it’s full and no longer absorbing odours or VOCs.

Yes. All Smart Air purifiers include a 1-year manufacturer’s warranty. In NZ, they’re also covered by the Consumer Guarantees Act. Thanks to their simple, robust design, warranty issues are rare - but if something goes wrong, you’re fully supported locally.

Both versions use the same H12 HEPA filter, so they handle particles equally well: dust, pollen, pet dander, mould spores and smoke. If allergies, asthma or general dust are your main concern, the HEPA only version does that job perfectly.

The Carbon (VOC) filter adds odour and gas control on top. Its 140g of real activated carbon pellets help with cooking and pet smells, smoke odour, and everyday VOCs. So if smells are part of the picture, go for the HEPA + Carbon version.

One bonus with the carbon version: it sits on the outside, so it doubles as a pre-filter and catches hair and larger debris before they reach the HEPA. Handy if you've got pets or a hair-heavy household, and you can gently vacuum it to clear it off. On the HEPA only version, a little more of that lands on the HEPA itself, which is fine, just gently vacuum or brush the outer surface now and then (don't wash it, the media isn't washable).

In short: HEPA only for particles and allergies, add carbon if you also want odour control or extra pre-filter protection in a hairy or dusty home.
