What it captures

H13 HEPA rated at 99.97% at 0.3 microns, the hardest particle size to catch, not the smallest. Particles above and below that size, including viruses, are captured more efficiently. At sufficient air changes per hour, it meaningfully reduces airborne virus concentrations. An optional carbon filter can be added for odours, VOCs, or smoke.

Assumes a standard 2.4 m ceiling. Air changes per hour is how many times the purifier cleans the room's full volume each hour. We aim for 3 or more for comfortable everyday use, and a bit higher for allergy-prone or busy spaces.

Do I need more than one?

Think of it like a heater. One heater in the hallway won't warm the whole house, you put the warmth where people actually are. A purifier works the same way: it cleans the space it is in, but it won't effectively pull air through closed doors or around corners.

The Blast is a stay-put workhorse for your biggest space, so the way to think about it is:

Set it up in the main open-plan area where people gather. That is where its airflow does the most.
Add a smaller unit like an SA600 or Sqair for bedrooms or any closed-off room the Blast cannot reach through walls.

A closed door makes a real difference here, since the Blast cleans the space it is in and cannot clear rooms sealed off from it. You can skip the rooms nobody really uses.

It also doesn't have to be the same model everywhere. The Blast covers a large open-plan area on its own, while a Sqair or SA600 looks after individual bedrooms. Most homes are well sorted with a Blast in the main space and smaller units in the rooms that matter.

My daughter can react to pollen, so I have 2 x Smart Air Blast MKII, 1 x Smart Air Blast Mini MKII deployed covering a large open living/dining/kitchen area and adjacent TV room and 3 x Smart Air SA600 in each bedroom and home office. These units run 24x7 inside our home.

Blast FAQs

The carbon filter is optional. To keep costs down for users who only need particle removal (allergens, viruses, dust), the Blast Mk II comes standard with its oversized H13 HEPA filter. If you want protection from VOCs and odours, such as during renovations, with new furniture, or in commercial spaces - the optional carbon filter contains ~0.9 kg of pellets, one of the largest on the market, for powerful absorption.

Air purifiers can help with dust, but they won’t remove all the visible stuff. Larger, heavier dust tends to settle on surfaces quickly, so it often falls before the purifier can capture it. What purifiers are best at is reducing the fine, invisible dust (PM2.5) that stays airborne longer - that’s the type most linked with allergies and irritation.

You’ll get the best results for dust with a high CADR purifier, and by avoiding ionisers, which can actually cause more dust to settle by making particles clump together. Running the purifier on higher speeds also gives it a better chance of catching dust before it drops.

HEPA filter: Expect around 42 months of life at 8 hours/day in NZ conditions. With its 14.85 m² surface area, the HEPA filter holds far more than typical models before needing replacement. Replace if it turns grey/black or airflow drops noticeably.

Carbon filter: Lifespan depends on odour/VOC levels. Do the “smell test” - if it develops a metallic/acidic smell, it’s saturated and needs replacing.
